about Deborah Szekely

At 103, Deborah Szekely remains a radiant testament to a vibrant, healthful life, embodying the very principles she has championed for more than 85 years. As founder of Rancho La Puerta in Baja California and the Golden Door Spa in San Diego, she helped shape the modern wellness and fitness movement, advocating daily movement, social connection, and organic nutrition.

Born in Brooklyn to immigrant parents, Deborah spent formative years in Tahiti, which influenced her lifelong embrace of natural living. In 1940, at just 18, she co-founded Rancho La Puerta with her husband, Edmond Szekely. What began as a rustic tent camp grew under her leadership into a world-class destination spanning 4,000 acres. In 1958, she established the Golden Door Spa, a legendary retreat beloved by Hollywood icons throughout the 1960s and ’70s.

Her influence extends far beyond hospitality. She served as President of the Inter-American Foundation, founded Eureka Communities to mentor nonprofit leaders, authored a guide for newly elected members of Congress, and was appointed U.S. delegate to UNESCO. Mexico recognized her impact with its highest honor, the Order of the Aztec Eagle.

Today, Deborah continues to meet weekly with Rancho La Puerta guests, hosting her celebrated Wednesday evening Q&A sessions. She is an active voice for healthier school meals, social justice, and volunteerism, while her San Diego home remains a gathering place for friends, leaders, and colleagues.

Deborah’s life is a profound reminder that vitality has no age limit. Through her vision, advocacy, and community leadership, she has inspired generations to embrace health, purpose, and reinvention at every stage of life.
